IMAX has announced a partnership with Starbreeze AB (creator of the StarVR headset) to create a location-based VR offering. Shopping centres, multiplex and other venues will be able to use this to offer immersive entertainment content, including games.
IMAX will create a premium VR experience that will use Starbreeze’s headset. Under the terms of the agreement, Starbreeze’s content library will be made available to consumers, as well as the new content produced using the new IMAX Google VR camera (see below). In addition, IMAX has said that it will seek to establish new VR content partnerships through its existing Hollywood relationships.
Starbreeze and IMAX will launch up to six sites this year, worldwide; a test site has already been selected.
During Google I/O, Google and IMAX announced that the companies are working together to develop a cinema-grade VR camera, using Google’s Jump technology (Google Jump Captures the World in 360 Degree 3D). The cameras will be designed from the ground up.
