Smartphones sales continue to intrude on other small-medium display categories, but automotive revenues continue to rise. According to IHS DisplaySearch, revenues in the category were up 26% last year, to become the second-highest growth product in the small-medium area. Revenues rose to $848 million last year, while the mobile phone display market was up 4% to $1.2 billion.
Overall, the small-and-medium FPD market volume rose 8%, to 2.5 billion units. However, smartphones cannibalised digital still cameras, portable gaming devices, portable media players, video cameras and other products. Mobile phone unit shipments were estimated to have risen 10%, and mobile PC display shipments to have increased 7%. Meanwhile, automotive displays are thought to have climbed 33%, to 87.3 million.
