What They Say
iFixit has compared its ratings for repairability with those from the system being trialled in a voluntary scheme in France. The site rates the Apple iPhone Note 20 at 3/10 whereas the French system gives a score of 8.1/10. The French system gives a better scheme where there are post-purchase support systems, even if the device is tricky to open and repair.
Despite the differences, iFixit welcomes the French initiative.
What We Think
We reported on the French initiative we reported on (France confronts ‘planned obsolescence’ with repairability rating), which is an early move towards an EU initiative to mandate repairability disclosure at the point of purchase. (European Legislators Spark Renewed Discussion on Global Right to Repair Movement). I agree with iFixit. Some progress in this area is a really good trend in the market. If it influences brands to make their devices more repairable, that would be a real achievement. (it may be age or just the zeitgeist, but over the last couple of years, I have got a lot of satisfaction from fixing things rather than simply replacing them. The combination of youtube videos and obscure parts being available on eBay have really materially changed how easy it is to do it.( (BR)
