The Information claims that Huawei is developing its own smartphone OS, to reduce its reliance on Android. The company currently uses a custom skin for the Android OS (which has been criticised for looking too much like the iPhone), but has apparently built a team – which includes former Nokia engineers – to develop its own operating system, in case its relationship with Google goes south.
Analyst Comment
A full smartphone OS is not the kind of thing that it built ‘just in case’. I suspect that Huawei is building the OS more to have full control over its products than to deal with a future that may never happen.
The Information tends to be a trustworthy source, which doesn’t cover ‘small news’, so we’ll give this report more credence than we would if it had been covered elsewhere. (TA)
