HDR is a mess, and porn isn’t going to save us this time

What They Say

The article points out that HDR is a mess with five incompatible formats

  • HLG (for broadcast)
  • HDR10 (open, based on PQ)
  • HDR10+ (open, based on PQ with dynamic metadata)
  • Dolby Vision (proprietary, based on PQ with dynamic metadata)
  • Technicolor (one workflow for HLG/HDR10/HDR10+)

It also includes a report that the iPhone 12 Pro can capture video content and display it with Dolby Vision and HLG.

“Not very long from now, this weirdly cluttered space will get uncluttered.”

Jon McCormack, Apple vice president of camera software Engineering, told PetaPixel,

What We Think

We wouldn’t disagree that the format sprawl is a mess, especially for consumers but also for content providers. Eventually things will settle out, we guess and Apple may be able to influence this. However, at the moment, as the article points out, Samsung (which drove the creation of HDR10+) and Roku are significant players that don’t support Dolby Vision.

Yoeri Geutskens has done a lot of work on the HDR ecosystems and I can strongly recommend his summary here although it is around a year old, now. BR)
