HC Semitek Uses Aixtron Machines for microLEDs

What They Say

Aixtron reported that a Chinese company, HC Semitek, has ordered AIX 2800G4-TM (IC2) and AIX G5+ C MOCVD systems to make microLEDs on 8″ x 6″ (203 x 152mm) substrates. The machines were shipped in Q4/2021, Aixtron said.

Aixtron said that the machines

“features a wafer-level control of the film surface temperature during the epitaxial process. This warrants a very accurate control of the Indium incorporation into the Multi-Quantum Wells (MQW), which will ultimately define the wavelength consistency among all produced wafers. Cassette-to-cassette automation coupled with in-situ cleaning ensure that no particle will contaminate the films during handling or the epitaxy processing.”

The aim is to avoid the need for pre-sorting and binning by ensuring very tight wavelength distribution and very low level of defects on their surfaces.

What We Think

If you can make LEDs good enough to not need sorting or binning, microLED display production becomes much more feasible. (BR)
