What They Say

We reported a couple of days ago on the Innolux demonstrations of miniLED and microLED at an event in Taiwan (OPTO Taiwan 2020 Live Coverage – Innolux and PlayNitride Unveil New Micro LED Displays. Now Digitimes has identified HC Semitek of China as the supplier of the miniLEDs for the 55″ display. The report also said that LG also used the firm’s LEDs in its 0.93mm pitch LED display for large TV applications.

The report said that its first miniLEDs were 3 x 6mil (152 x 76µm) but plans 5 x 10mil (127 x 255 µm) for volume production. A forecast has been made of a global market of $550 million in 2023 for the equivalent of 3.5 million 4″ (10cm) miniLED wafers used in fine pitch displays. On the other hand, it expects the market value for miniLED-backlit TVs to be at $8.2 billion by then, with 20% of the market value being in the miniLEDs.

SemiTek plans to invest CNY1.393 billion ($206 million) to set up an R&D and production base for mini/microLED and GaN chips, with annual production capacity of 950,000 mini/microLED wafers for the former, the sources said. SemiTek has issued new shares worth up to CNY1.5 billion for private placement.

What We Think

SemiTek plans a lot of investment in this market and obviously expects a strong market to develop. (BR)
