Gurman’s view of Apple’s Plans

What They Say

9to5Mac said that it has heard that Apple is developing a new version of the Pro Display XDR with higher resolution than the current 32″ 6016 x 3384 device. Bloomberg’s Apple specialist, Mark Gurman has also said that he has heard such stories and said that it may ‘get a resolution bump to 7K’. It may also, like the Studio Display launched last week, include an A-series processor that would provide the audio and conferencing features that the Studio Display has. He also said that he expects the following line-up by the end of 2023:

Pro:

  • MacBook Pro (14 inch and 16 inch) with an M2 Pro and M2 Max
  • iMac Pro with an M2 Pro and M2 Max
  • Mac Studio with an M2 Max and M2 Ultra
  • Mac Pro with an M2 Ultra and M2 Extreme
  • Apple Pro Display 7K

Consumer:

  • MacBook Air with an M2
  • MacBook Pro (13 inch) with an M2
  • Mac mini with an M2 and an M2 Pro version to replace the Intel model
  • iMac with an M2
  • Apple Studio Display

He also said, responding to a question, that the M1 Ultra, the top of the new Studio range, is unlikely to make it into a Mac Pro because of the power/heat issues.

What We Think

Well, Apple made a lot of the fact that its Ultra-based Studio monitor can playback 18 8K Prores 4:2:2 video. However, the firm’s PCs do not currently support 8K (although they could be made to work with a monitor like the Sharp one that had four separate inputs and acted like four 4K displays). I suspect that a 7K display is very unlikely. To go nearer, but not right the way to 8K would seem to be missing the point to me. Then again, I guess the 7680 x 4320 of 8K could be described as ‘7K’, just to add some confusion. (BR)
