Global smartphone shipments to decline in 2Q21, says Digitimes Research

What They Say

Digitimes said that it expects Q2 to see smartphone shipments decline because of chip shortages. Overall the firm saw 47% year on year growth in Q1.

  • Samsung was up 15.9% to 75 million and #1 position
  • Apple was in second place with 56 million units and up 49.5%

Huawei’s problems have given an opportunity to Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo to launch 5G products at the lower end of the market. Huawei was almost down 50% in Q1. The Honor spin-off is said to have hit tight supply chain conditions which are limiting its purchasing power.

Smartphone shipments from first-tier brands are expected to decline in the second quarter before picking up again in the second half of the year, bolstered by most vendors’ launch of new models.

For all of 2021, global smartphone shipments are likely to reach 1.35-1.4 billion units or comparable to the figures achieved in 2019, Digitimes Research estimates.
