Global Pay-TV Subscribers Reached 1.05 Billion in Q2 2017

According to Dataxis, the number of global pay-TV subscribers reached 1.05 billion at the end of the second quarter of 2017. Also, 60 million pay-TV subscribers were added for the second quarter of 2017 compared to the second quarter of 2016. The majority of the growth came from IPTV and linear OTT, with growth of 24% and 44% respectively, based on the previous quarter of 2017. Although Linear OTT is growing, it represents only 1% of the total pay-TV market globally. Cable TV is showing a negative growth while DTH and DTT are stagnant.

Asia-Pacific, with 8% quarter growth, is among the highest growing pay-TV market in terms of subscribers. This is true especially in China and India together, which have a 48% of the pay-TV subscribers for the second quarter of 2017. Apart from North America showing negative growth, all other regions have 1% to 4% pay-TV subscriber growth for the second quarter of 2016, compared to the second quarter of 2017.
