What They Say
Seoul Semiconductor issued a press release saying that it has won a case in the New Jersey District Court over the use of its Wicop patent for LED lens attachment. The feature makes it popular for automotive use and the firm said that 10% of all automobiles (102 models). However the technology was used without a licence by 13 lighting brands and that use has now been blocked by the court.
Seoul also pointed out that the technology is in 20% of TVs.
What We Think
We reached out to the firm to try to confirm if the use in displays had caused patent issues, but had received no response at press time. I suspect that the technology would have been correctly licensed by TV makers – they are sensitive on IP issues, while the headlamps may have been supplied as third party spares.
