Gionee Abandons AMOLED

Last November, Gionee launched its 5.5″ AMOLED (1280 x 720) smartphone, the S6, with a metal chassis and thin, light design. Now the firm has changed the screen for an LCD (IPS panel) and increased the resolution to 1920 x 1080 in the S6 Pro.

While the chassis is still the same, holding the 5.5″ display in a metallic housing, internally the phone has had an upgrade. Gionee has swapped the MT6753 chip, from Mediatek, for the Helio P10, running Android 6.0. This has a 1.8GHz octa-core Cortex A53 processor, Mali-T860MP2 GPU and 4GB of RAM.

A fingerprint reader is installed on the rear of the device, along with a 13MP camera with PDAF. The front camera is an 8MP unit. Dual SIM slots are also featured.

In terms of storage, users will have access to 64GB. A 3,130mAh battery is installed, and a USB-C port is featured.

Gionee is selling the S6 Pro in China, for CNY1,660 ($250) ex VAT.
