German Market for CE Up Overall in Q1, but TVs & Smartphone Volumes Down

The GFU in Germany released its Hemix Home Electronics Market Index for Q1 2021 and said that home electronics sales were up 4.8% on 2020 at €11 billion.

The three CE segments developed very differently:

  • Consumer electronics recorded a minus of 4.5% to just under €1.9 billion.
  • Privately used telecommunication products achieved a turnover of almost €3 billion with an increase of 4%.
  • Privately used IT products were able to continue their great growth in the first quarter of 2021 with 12.9% to €2.2 billion.

TV was down 10.8% in units to 1.4 million, but ASPs rose to €612. Video game consoles, on the other hand, achieved a high gain with a sales growth of 31.7% to €133 million and a unit increase of 16.8% to 456,000 units. The average price for the consoles rose by 12.8% to €293.

Smartphones recorded a 2.4% increase in sales to around €2.6 billion but units sold fell to 4.6 million devices (- 6.7%), which was due to closed retail outlets.

Desktop PCs (- 17.5%) and notebooks (- 17.2%) recorded significant decreases in unit numbers as the numbers were high in Q1 2020, while tablet PCs (+ 63.1%) and monitors (+ 22.5%) continued to grow significantly. The sales figures showed accordingly:

    • Desktop PCs -8.8% to €230 million
    • Notebooks -3.1% to €870 million
    • Tablet PCs +79.1% to €553 million
    • monitors+37.5% to €264 million

In each of these categories, the average prices also grew by double digits.
