Patent filings that have appeared online indicate that Samsung and LG may soon implement full-colour secondary displays on the backs of their smartphones.
One from Samsung shows a rear screen approximately half the size of the primary display, positioned at the top of the handset, above the rear camera lens, while an image from a patent belonging to LG shows a smaller display, but in a similar position.
These rear displays are believed to be intended for entry-level and mid-range devices, while higher-end smartphones will adopt the long-awaited foldable design, with two full-size displays opening out into a tablet size.
