Future iPhones to Feature a Curved OLED Display?

Apple is working on a new iPhone design which incorporates a curved OLED display according to various reports online. Originating from Bloomberg, the reports suggest that Apple’s curved screen will vary from Samsung’s, in that it will “curve inwardly from top to bottom”, in a similar way to the LG Flex. The report went on to say that the screen design won’t be in use for two to three years yet.

Samsung originally introduced curved displays in its premium Galaxy Edge range but, as of the S8, has been using them as standard in all its smartphones.

I still have a clear memory of seeing an LG executive hammering a table with his Flex phone in a private area at ISE, to demonstrate how good the flexible display was at resisting mechanical damage! Having said that, it amazes me that many users are prepared to put up with cracked and broken displays – I have seen three in the last week.

The fact that LG did not continue with the long way curve suggests that consumers really weren’t turned on by the feature. It should make phone use marginally better, but I’m less sure about the convenience when using apps. (BR)
