What They Say

Mastering and reference monitor specialist, Flanders Scientific, has a new XM312U UltraHD monitor that has a peak brightness of 5,000 cd/m².

Bram Desmet, CEO of Flanders Scientific said that some projects are looking for content that can be mastered in HDR at up to 4,000 cd/m² and previously, the brightest display it had was limited to 3,000 cd/m².

The monitor also has 20% more backlight zones (>2300) and twice the panel static contrast ratio of the previous 3000 nit device. The colour gamut is beyond P3 and Rec. 709. Power consumption is 250W.

The monitor will arrive ‘in the Fall’.

What We Think

I suspect that the amount of content really needing 4,000 nits is quite limited, and I’ve heard that many colour graders don’t like really high peaks, but then again, PQ (ST2084) can cover images up to 10K nits and one never knows how the market will develop over time, so mastering content now with this level of peak brightness should give a good feeling of confidence that the process will not need re-doing for a long time. Although consumption displays with such high peaks are not yet available, dealing correctly with peaks should give a better image than simply clipping the peaks. Consumer displays end up managing the range anyway to map it to the limit of the display. (BR)
