Free VOD Service Begins Phased Rollout on Roku

US-exclusive on-demand platform Roku has begun rolling out its brand new free VOD service, The Roku Channel.

The Roku Channel requires no subscription and allows users to watch award-winning movies and other content without payment. The service is supported by advertising, but is said to show half the advertising per hour of linear TV.

Studios including Lionsgate, MGM, Sony and Warner Brothers are on board, as well as publishers American Classics, Fandor, FilmRise, Nosey, OVGuide, Popcornflix, Vidmark and YuYu, with even more planned to be added going forward.

Users can add The Roku Channel from the Roku Channel Store as soon as it becomes available in their region.
