Fraunhofer HHI used NAB to debut some upgrades to their OmniCam-360 system. This is a 10-segment mirror-type system that captures 360º video with an optional camera on top. 2D and 3D versions are available. At NAB, developer Christian Weissig told us that the new rig has new cameras that are smaller, lighter and higher quality. Content is captured in a 10K x 2K format and encoded with HEVC at 22 Mbps. Stitching can be done in real time too with a 4K version delivered for VR viewing.
At the Fraunhofer booth, the OmniCam-360 was showing live captures of 360º panorama video. The video is transmitted from the OmniCam-360 to an UHDTV. This was also being sent to the SES Astra booth. – CC
