Forthcoming Xbox One X Update Adds HDMI 2.1 Features

Previously announced HDMI 2.1 features coming to Microsoft’s Xbox One X console will arrive soon, as part of an imminent firmware update. New features include variable refresh rate (VRR) and auto low latency mode (ALLM), both enabled by HDMI 2.1 connectivity and capable of providing enhanced gaming experiences when paired with compatible display hardware.

VRR automatically adjusts the refresh rate of the monitor to the output frame rate of the console in real time, in order to eliminate screen tearing and ensure smooth gameplay. ALLM simply detects if the connected display features a “Game Mode” setting and switches to it automatically, switching off post-processing features that can induce input lag — useful for users who may not know such a mode exists or how to activate it.

A release date for the next Xbox One firmware update is yet to be revealed.
