Flat Panel Displays to Enjoy Record Revenues in 2021

What They Say

In its usual weekly data release on its blog, DSCC said that revenues in the FPD industry would hit a new record of $168 billion, up 39% year on year from $121 billion. TV was the top application at $52.6 billion with OLED and LCD both rising. Revenues for monitors, notebooks and tablets are expected to grow by 48%, 84% and 35%, respectively, to a total of $43B. The market is expected to decline slightly for the next few years as LCD prices drop back from their peak and revenues from automotive and smartphone applications will continue to rise.

In units and area, the market will heat new peaks as smartphone planes are expected to get to nearly 2 billion units and the overall market will grow to nearly 3.9 billion units in 2025. Display area will grow partly because TV sizes will continue to grow.

What We Think

There are useful charts on the blog of revenues for LCD & OLED, display area by application and units by application. An area that DSCC doesn’t track is the LED display area, which is arguably a flat panel display technology (I guess it depends how you define flat!), so if you add that on, the overall display business would be even more than the $168 billion.
