What They Say
In digging around for more on the Samsung use of an LTPS backplane for its 89″ microLED TV, we spotted this article from Gizmochina that reported that Samsung launched its 110″ set in China at $157,000 and the site said that the first batch of sets was ‘sold out’ although it didn’t report how many were in the batch.
What We Think
Well, we assume that a ‘batch’ is more than one!
I remember talking to someone from Sharp, many years ago, when it was offering its rear-projection TVs for $50,000 each. Why would you do that, I asked. It turned out that, at the time, if you had R&D spending for a product, you could claim a significant share from the government in Japan, but only “if you brought a product to market”. You didn’t have to sell volume, but you did have to offer at least one for sale. That explained a few products I saw at the time!
I doubt there is anything like that with Samsung, which has a long term aim to be in the microLED TV market. (BR)
