Barrons.com reported research from Evercore ISI analyst Mark Mahaney who said that Facebook is on track to sell more than eight million Quest 2 headsets in the the first year. He believes that the firm has sold five to six million units to date. That would mean that the headset represents around $2.4 billion which is 3% of Facebook’s revenues.
Separately, IDC published its data which reports that Oculus captured two-thirds of global VR headset shipments during Q1 2021. The market was up 52.4% year on year. Standalone headsets are now 82.7% of the market, up from 50.5% last year. DPVR and Pico also did well, growing 108.6% and 44.7% year over year respectively. HTC and Sony rounded out the top 5 VR headset companies.
IDC thinks that the market will show 28.9% for this year although shortages may impact this. The market is expected to reach 28.6 million units by 2025 with a CAGR of 41.4%.
