EC Affirms Environmental Benefit of Cadmium-Based Quantum Dots

QD Vision, Inc., the leading manufacturer of quantum dot solutions for display products, announced that the European Commission has granted an exemption to the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS 2) Directive for Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE). The ruling confirms that QD Vision’s Color IQ™ quantum dot technology is beneficial for the environment.

As stated in the official European Commission Delegated Directive, “Colour converting LEDs using quantum dots have significant advantages regarding energy efficiency and colour performance. Quantum dots are already used in displays and are likely to be introduced in illumination applications in the coming years. The use of quantum dots in displays has a positive overall impact due to their low energy consumption. The use of cadmium in downshifting cadmium based semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots for use in display lighting applications should therefore be exempted from the prohibition until 30 June 2018,” according to the European Commission.

“This EU decision clears the way for QD Vision to strengthen their position in a market we estimate to grow to over $10.6 billion by 2025,” said Dr. Jennifer Colegrove, CEO and principal analyst at Touch Display Research Inc. “Quantum dot technology is one of the biggest breakthroughs for LCD in recent years.” Touch Display Research recently published their second edition of the Quantum Dot Display and Lighting Technologies and Market Forecast Report, available at www.touchdisplayresearch.com.

“This RoHS exemption underscores what we’ve been proving both scientifically and in the market for years: QD Vision’s Color IQ technology is safe for the environment, safe to manufacture, and safe for consumers to enjoy in their televisions and other displays,” said Seth Coe-Sullivan, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of QD Vision. “Cadmium-based quantum dots achieve the highest energy efficiency, color quality, and reliability specifications amongst all wide color gamut technologies available.”

QD Vision has also been recognized for its green manufacturing processes, having won the 2014 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awardfrom the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) – the highest domestic honor in the field. The company was recognized for its ‘green chemistry’ approach to quantum dot technology for energy-efficient commercial display and lighting products.
