What They Say
Epson said that it has sold 30 million units since it started selling 3LCD projectors in 1989 and its first PC-connected projector in 1994.
What We Think
3LCD has sometime struggled against single chip DLP as the need for three devices was a significant cost penalty. The firm also had problems with organic alignment layers for its LCDs, which tended to degrade because of the heat from the projector lamps. However, the company solved that problem with inorganic alignment layers and has worked hard for years to highlight the advantages in colour volume over single chip DLP projectors using an RGBW architecture. Epson forecasts a slowing down in growth this year and we have an interview set up for next week with a projector supplier to better understand the impact of Covid on the market. We’ll report back.
