What They Say
Digitimes reports that Epistar plans to increase prices for LEDs and miniLEDs this quarter as demand is strong and material costs have risen, quoting the firm’s president speaking at Touch Taiwan. The firm is now said to have annual capacity for 1 million 4″ wafers for miniLED, which is about right for demand, the firm thinks, so it will not expand capacity immediately.
AlGaInP LED chip demand has improved but the firm is still below 90% utilisation for blue LEDs.
What We Think
No real surprise here. In my early days as an editor, I hadn’t quite worked out how makers can use news sources to push their pricing agendas. An insider at a big CRT supplier, would ring me with ‘news’ about trends in pricing. I realised a bit later that he was doing this so that he could quote my story when he went to see his customers with the ‘news’. (BR)
