DVB Switch Drives Hemix Index Growth in Germany

hemixThe German Home Electronics Market Index (HEMIX) is a joint project of the Federal Association of Retail Technology (BVT), GfK Retail and Technology and GFU Consumer and Home Electronics. It has shown 2.2% YoY growth in the first half of the year. Consumer electronics saw a 2.4% YoY rise in sales to nearly €12.5 billion ($14.8 billion). Entertainment electronics and telecommunications were up 9.1% and 4.6% respectively, but IT products were down 9.4%.

TV sets saw 3.1% growth in value with sales of almost €2 billion ($2.4 billion) and were up 3.4% by volume to 3.4 million units. The conversion from DVB-T to DVB-T2 HD broadcasting led to the sale of 3.4 million STBs (up 172%) costing €349 million ($412 million, up 255%). Meanwhile smartphone sales were up 3.9% in value but down 3.4% in volume.

Consumer PC sales continue to decline and were down 10% on last year.

Analyst Comment

The HEMIX index replaces the previous CEMIX metric and adds home appliances and small electrical items to the original consumer electronics segments. Both those segments were slightly up on last year. (BR)
