DSCC Updates on Advanced Smartphones

What They Say

In its weekly release of market information, DSCC has shared some details from its latest Advanced Smartphone Features Report.

90Hz and higher panels are taking significant unit share in 2021, with the 60Hz share falling to 63% share in Q1’21 on a unit basis and 61% share on a revenue basis. 90Hz is holding steady and gained unit share in Q1’21 to 12% and is expected to rise to 19% in Q2’21 as a result of new 90Hz smartphones from Samsung, Vivo and Xiaomi. 120Hz also gained unit share in Q1’21 to 25% from 12% in Q4’20. 120Hz is expected to increase to 29% unit share in Q2’21 and 37% unit share in Q3’21.

LTPO backplanes on smartphones are also expected to increase with a boost from adoption by Apple. (LTPO is a Hot Technology – but What Is It?)

What We Think

As usual, there is much more on the DSCC blog, with details of 5G roll outs and adoption. Although 5G doesn’t, on the face of it, affect the display, the extra space and power taken by the technology means ore pressure to save both, meaning a move typically to flexible OLEDs. There is also data on the blog on LTPO adoption.

It was highlighted at the DSCC/SID Business Conference that high refresh is a popular feature with smartphone brands as it is only a small cost adder, but commands a premium in the market. (BR)
