DSCC Looks at Smartphone Display Market and Technology Outlook

What They Say

DSCC published a substantial blog article that summarised the smartphone session at the recent SID/DSCC Business Conference during Display Week. The blog article also covered a talk by OTI Lumionics that looked in detail at the challenges of under-display-cameras.

His conclusions were:

  • 2022 will be a challenging year
  • OLEDs will outperform LCD in the market
  • Apple will continue to dominate the OLED smartphone market
  • foldable display production will surge in 2022 to to over 20 million panels and over 16 million phone shipments based on lower priced clamshell devices
  • smartphone displays will remain the largest application category by revenue

For UDCs, six challenges were identified:

  1. Image Blur/Diffraction
  2. Low Light Performance
  3. Video Conferencing
  4. System Integration
  5. Pixel Lifetime/Burn-in
  6. 3D Facial Recognition

The article covers the solutions from OTI to these challenges.

What We Think

If you weren’t at the event, the blog article is worth a read and even if you were, the high bandwidth session is worth a repeat – a lot of ground was covered. We have reproduced the technology roadmap that Ross Young presented at the event.

The details on UDCs are also worth a look. We have been reporting on OTI since 2018 and the company revealed that its cathode patterning process is now qualified by two panel suppliers for G6 and at the event it showed a render with an additional chamber added to the Canon Tokki FMM VTE system for the process. DSCC said that it believes these suppliers are SDC and LGD. (BR)
