Dataxis: Mobile Operators in Latin America Keen to Adopt OTT Video

Dataxis reports from its latest research that 34 mobile operators in Latin America have already deployed their own OTT platform as added value for their clients. Moreover, some of these are keen to add third-party platforms to empower their offer like América Móvil and Telefónica. There are also eleven cases of mobile networks offering a third-party OTT platform. Most of these operators are Millicom branches. Both groups account for a total of 591 million lines, representing 86% of the country’s total.

With the rise of LTE and the extended base of smartphones, mobile operators are said to be the ideal partner for OTT platforms. Furthermore, mobile companies can solve billing and collection problems, which hinder the adoption of OTT in LatAm. OTT remains an effective way for mobile operators to access the video business. Additionally, 79 operators are linked to a traditional Pay-TV operation—this group owns 59% of the mobile market, much less than the group of mobile operators associated with OTT.

As of the third quarter of 2017, 78 mobile operators in LatAm were not associated with a traditional Pay-TV operation or an OTT offer. However, this target group handled only 46 million of the country’s lines, representing 6.7% of the total.
