What They Say
Real released a video that showed its latest ‘light field’ VR display optics system that shows how different objects at various distances can be rendered in focus at the centre of the display – the foveated region – the kind of image resulting that has been previously shown by Varjo. The company has also shown a rendering of its next prototype headset (the current one is significantly more bulky). Both are shown below (click on the first image to see the second)
The firm said that the focussing in the video is entirely from adjustments to the camera that was used to look at the image. In other words, the headset display is genuinely presenting a light field to the eye, so that the eye can focus on near or far items in a natural way.
The RoadtoVR article has some interesting comments that are worth a look, commenting on some of the artefacts in the video and a discussion of frame rate issues in the camera.
What We Think
This technology looks interesting, but is currently still quite (too) bulky. Still it’s good to see progress. (BR)
