Covid First – Then Chips – Now Electricity is Supply Chain Challenge in China

What They Say

DSCC published a blog article that highlighted electricity shortages in China. Last week, new restrictions were put in place on electricity use as part of a move to reduce coal usage and imports from Australia . A severe drought has hit hydro power and wind-generated power has slowed in growth. (for more on the background see CNBC)

Although there is no immediate impact on the FPD industry directly, there may be indirect effects with chemical prices rising. There is also concern that strict power limits may limit FPD production in the future and that the macro economic impact of the restrictions may damage overall economic growth and soften demand.

What We Think

It’s hard to be in the display industry without realising what a small and interconnected world we live in! At the moment, in the UK, apart from the well-known fuel issues, a shortage of workers to kill and process pigs (part of the effects of the self-imposed type of Brexit chosen by our government) may mean 110,000 pigs having to be slaughtered on farms and destroyed. That is, if there are enough vetinary workers to slaughter them. (BR)
