What They Say
Tier 1 automotive supplier, Continental, said that it had received an order for OLEDs for automotive use (described as high volume production) valued at €1 billion. The display consists of two display devices integrated behind an optically bonded surface. Production is due to start in 2023.
What We Think
Hmmm… this looks like a real breakthrough for OLEDs in the automotive application. Although they have been used before, they have been in extremely high end autos and niche applications (such as mirror replacements by Audi). Qualification and price have always been the challenges for OLED. Auto makers always wanted the form factor, flexibility and great look (especially the deep blacks) but the demands technically are high and the price pressures very high. At the moment, I haven’t found the supplier of the OLEDs, but will keep digging. My bet would be LG Display, but that is just speculation. If you know differently, I’d be happy to hear from you! (BR)
