China handset sales rebound in January

What They Say

Digitimes reported that the Chinese smartphone market has seen a bounce in sales in January, boosted by new budget 5G handsets by Chinese brands. The volume reached 40 million in January, up 93% on the same month a year ago according to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT). 5G shipments were 68% of the total, and Chinese brands took 84% of the market. The Apple iPhone 12 line-up totalled 5.8-6 million according to the report.

By the second half of 2021, 5G handsets will have reached 80% of new handset sales.

Separately, the site forecast that global 5G handset sales will hit 550 million units this year.

What We Think

5G is good for OLED display makers. It’s starting to make me wonder if I should think about 5G – but I doubt it would help me get any better data rates on my smartphone, even 4G is not great at my home/office and I can’t see me going out much for a while, yet! (BR)
