What They Say
Invidis reported some information from Omdia on the LED market in Q1 2022. The report forecast that the average pitch ( which is calculated by the weighted arithmetic mean assuming the average density of pixels distributed over the entire LED display area), will reduce ‘sharply’ from 3.1mm in 2019 to 2.1mm by 2026.
The China region is seeing the fastest decrease in average pixel pitch, leading the global trend toward smaller pixel pitches. The recently released ProAV Vertical Market Viewpoint Service from Omdia notes that the penetration of direct-view LED (DV-LED) displays compared to displays in China is highest among other regions, especially in transportation, hospitality/ healthcare and control rooms. For indoor FPP video walls (<=1.99mm pixel pitch) in China, LCD video walls accounted for 68.9 percent share compared to LED video walls in 2019, with Omdia predicting that the share of LCD video walls will drop to 30 percent in 2026 compared to LED video walls.
What We Think
Nothing surprising here although given the range of different applications that LED is used for, the average pitch is not that useful as a metric for the whole market. It would be more interesting if there was some breakdown by category, but I guess that’s in the paid for report! In the end, the trend to DV-LED is unstoppable – there’s almost no reason not to want to go LED except cost. (BR)
