Canon’s New Monitor has HDR Support, WCG and Wide Viewing Angles

What They Say

We caught up today with a press release from Canon that announced a new monitor for broadcast monitoring. The 18.4″ UltraHD unit has 1,000 cd/m² or output, with 1,000,000:1 contrast and is said to have ‘enhanced control over the backlight’ to support HDR (and there is a neat SDR/HDR split screen mode. The monitor has support for WCG including DCI-P3+ and ‘Cinema Color’. No coverage of Rec 2020 was quoted. It meets EBU requirements for HDM mastering. There is a single HDMI and four inputs (SDI) and SDI outputs for multi-image display.

What We Think

As before, this one seems to use a dimming backlight, although there are no details from Canon. The firm said it has a ‘new optical design’ for wider viewing, but again there were few details. We have reached out to the firm to try to get more. (BR)
