What They Say
Apple recently announced a system to use an iPhone to adjust the colour balance of a TV connected to an Apple TV box. CNet tested the system and found, basically, that if the TV is in a mode that is not intended to be accurate to D65 white point, it does generally improve the colour balance, but if the TV is in a relatively accurate mode, such as a cinema mode, it has little effect and in one test actually made the image slightly less accurate.
What We Think
In the table below, the N/A for the LG OLED in Cinema mode is because the Apple system identified the set as not needing adjustment.
Clearly, there will be limits to what can be done using an STB rather than using, for example, the firmware in the TV as Calman does. Still, anything that makes it simpler and cheaper to get closer to accurate images is to be welcomed. My only thought was that one of the issues with ‘vivid’ or bright modes tend to use more power than calibrated modes, I think. On that basis, using these modes and ‘fixing the picture’ with the box may not be the best result for the environment. (BR)
