BOE is committed to investing 29 billion yuan ($4 billion) in a 6th-generation MiniLED production line located in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Zone. Construction began in February 2023, and by December of that year, the project had reached its topping-off stage. In August 2024, equipment move-in took place, and Section A of the plant passed its completion acceptance check in December 2024. This week, the plant entered the commissioning phase, signaling that the transition to initial production is very close and that the pathway to full-scale operations by 2026 is on track.
BOE has upgraded the chip-on-board (COB) production line and claims more efficiency, more automation, and better yields . It aims for a monthly production capacity of 50,000 sheets once the plant reaches full-scale operations, targeting a substrate size of 1500mm × 1850mm. The line relies on advanced LTPS and LTPO processes, giving BOE some differentiation in high-resolution MiniLED direct-view backplanes and possibly in VR displays.
The market for premium MiniLED TVs is one of the bright spots of growth in the Chinese TV market – which facing its own issues in 2025 with a slowdown in sales that is being boosted with government incentives – but also in Europe and North America where the price differential and perceived value of MiniLED easily rivals that of premium OLED products. And, you can get bigger screens with MiniLED which has its own appeal, especially when live sporting events seem to be a driver of sales in this category.
