BOE and Himax Announce an Electric Vehicle Design Win

What They Say

Himax Technologies and BOE Varitronix put out a press release saying that they had collaborated to “secure a flexible AMOLED automotive display solution design-win with a leading new energy vehicle (“NEV”) maker. The solution has recently been applied to the customer’s upcoming launch of a flagship NEV model”.

The display is a 12.8″ unit that will be used as a Centre Information Display and will use the Himax AMOLED driver IC and timing controller (TCon). The Himax TCon supports dual-gate and MUX2 panel structure, 180-degree rotation with embedded color engine, along with a panel failure detection feature for passenger safety.

Separately, BOE Varitronix said that its business grew 27% to $582 million in 2020 with 75% coming from TFT and touch modules. The growth was strong in automotive (+33%) mainly from China, Korea and Japan. The firm grew just 9% in industrial displays and said that it is promoting TFT displays for hign end white goods in Europe. It also said it is increasing its investment in AR and HUD displays through Shenzhen Jiangcheng Technology Co., Ltd

What We Think

Gaining an automotive win for a flexible OLED is a good achievement for BOE. The 12.8″ unit is not yet listed in the product section of its website, but, of course, there is often a significant delay between design wins and volume delivery in the automotive segment. (BR)
