BOE almost made no iPhone OLED panels since February

What They Say

The Elec reports that BOE has only made a small number of OLED panels since February. This was initially because of a shortage of drivers (with LX Semicon reported to be prioritising LG Display), but the drop is more than just reflecting that factor. The news site said that speculation is that BOE has upset Apple by changing a detail of the design of panels and failing to inform its client. However others speculate that the drop may be because the firm is working on getting around Samsung Display (SDC) patents. SDC recently said that it planned to use its patent position to protect its market position.

The report highlighted that, strategically, Apple needs BOE as a supplier to keep price pressure on SDC and LGD.

What We Think

Another topic for gossip next week! I doubt that BOE will say much, but their competitors might 🙂 (BR)
