BAE unveils lightweight LiteWave head-up display

What They Say

BAE Systems has a new HUD that is said to be 70% smaller and lighter than conventional systems and can be used in very limited cockpit areas. It is described as ‘notebook sized’ and is also said to be 80% quicker to install and be easier to maintain. It uses patented waveguide technology called LiteWave. The lightguide can be adjusted to suit different pilots and is claimed to have the largest eye-motion box of any HUD available. The unit is made in the UK in Rochester, Kent, where more than 15,000 HUDs in 50 different aircraft types have been made. It can be used in military or commercial aircraft.

What We Think

I’m not well acquainted with this application, so won’t add much of a comment, but the changes in size and weight are not usually so dramatic, although with a niche market like this and tricky qualification, it can take a good number of years to develop a new version. (BR)
