What They Say
Nanosys has sold a microLED fab facility and associated engineering team to Avicena which is developing ultra-fast microLEDs for low power interchip optical interfaces that can extend up to 10m but are said to use less power than lasers while reaching ”Multi-Tbps” with individual microLEDs reaching 14Gbps.
What We Think
Nanosys acquired the fab when it bought gl? in May 2021 and Avicena has been collaborating with Nanosys by using the fab. I had heard some time ago ‘on the grapevine’ that gl?’s nanowire approach had been abandoned but hadn’t been able to confirm it. By coincidence, Aledia, which has also been developing nanowire microLEDs has announced a deal with QustomDot (Polychromatic microLEDs via Colour Conversion). I need to get my head around all these changes!
The deal raises questions about Nanosys will continue to pursue its microLED strategy, so we’ll be reporting again, it seems. (BR)
