What They Say
The Elec reports that the automotive display market jumped 22% in 2020 to 351 million units, quoting Omdia as the source. Centre stack displays grew by 47% in the the year and accounted for 56.5% of all automotive displays.
Instrument cluster displays (ICDs) increased by 11% to take 30% of the market. Automotive monitors accounted for mid-10% of all displays while rear seat entertainment displays and side and room mirrors each accounted for less than 1%.
12.3″ was 32.7% of the market by size in Q3, with CSDs took 64% and ICD took 34.8%. 10.2″ was the second most popular automotive display, accounting for 20.15% of the total. 85.1% of them were CSD and 11.5% were monitors.
Omdia said it expected the automotive display market to recover in the second half of 2021. However, though automobile companies are planning to stock up displays, display panel makers may be less inclined to make them due to low profitability.
What We Think
Omdia said that sales were down earlier in 2020, but recovered later in the year. It also expects the market to grow better in the second half of 2021. At the moment, there are lots of reports of production problems for car makers that are struggling to get the semiconductors they need. Reuters reported that TSMC had agreed to prioritise automotive chips if it is able to increase supply, a move that Reuters said was requested by the German Economic Minister to a Taiwanese minister. The report said that automotive chips are just 3% of its output. Auto makers had previously dropped their purchasing because of reduced sales earlier in 2020. (BR)
