The next update for tvOS (11.2) will add support for automatic frame rate and dynamic range switching to the Apple TV 4K.
Once the option is enabled in the settings screen, the Apple TV 4K will be able to automatically switch between 24, 30 and 60Hz frame rates, as well as between SDR, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, to match the source.
Apps that use Apple’s standard video player will work right away, whereas other third-party apps that use their own players will require software updates. One such app that is already taking advantage of this feature is Infuse, whose latest update (5.6.2) will activate the automatic switching features for all users that have updated to tvOS 11.2, which is so far only available in public beta.
No official release date for tvOS 11.2 has been announced at the time of publishing.
