AUO shows a new 7.9-inch reflective cholesteric LCD display prototype and a MicroLED Dome!

What They Say

At Touch Taiwan, AUO showed a ‘simulation dome’ based on microLED at the Touch Taiwan show recently. The unit was made by Brogent Technologies and is shown in the image below.

What We Think

Well, it’s strange world of synchronicity. Last week I said to a maker of simulators that I could imaging MicroLEDs being used for domes and this week I see an image. The strange thing was that I was tracking down a report on a 7.9″ cholesteric LCD prototype that was also shown at the event. I’ll follow up on that topic next week as I will be meeting AUO at Display Week.

The idea of using microLEDs is a good one and I plan to ask AUO about the development as at the moment I don’t have confirmation that this unit will be shown in San Jose. I would expect this kind of system to be quite expensive, but it should have a long life. It seems more likely that it will be superseded before it fails. (BR)
