AUO Debuts Circular OLED at CITE

AUO recently showed a range of new products at the China Information Technology Expo 2015, in Shenzen. As well as its existing range of UltraHD quantum dot LCD TVs (55″ – 85″), AUO debuted the world’s largest curved monitor and a circular AMOLED display for smartwatches.

AUO ALCD TVA key announcement by AUO was the reveal of so-called ‘Advanced LCD’ (ALCD) technology. ALCD models combine a variety of technologies – such as UltraHD resolution, a curved design, quantum dots and high dynamic range – to create premium displays. These features are being used on AUO’s 65″ TV.

A 35″ ultra-wide curved LCD monitor was presented, with 2560 x 1080 resolution and a 2,000R curvature. The display covers 100% sRGB.

In terms of mobile devices, AUO showed smartphone panels ranging from 5.2″ to 5.5″. There were 5.2″ and 5.5″ LTPS displays (1920 x 1080 and 2560 x 1440, respectively), as well as a 5.5″ a-Si unit (1920 x 1080).

Moving on to integrated touch units, AUO showed a 5.5″ LTPS type (1920 x 1080) and 5″ a-Si (1280 x 720), which could be operated with gloves. An on-cell touch panel was integrated into a 15.6″ notebook display, which could recognise 10 touches. On-cell technology was also shown on an 8″ tablet unit.

Visitors could see a 9″ display for vehicle console use. Little information was available at the time of writing; AUO said that it had high resolution, a wide colour gamut, wide viewing angles and high weather tolerance, as well as low reflections.

Finally, the company debuted a range of AMOLED displays for wearables. A 1.6″ unit was on show, as was a fully-circular 1.4″ model. AUO applied a special circular cut to this product to reveal the whole display area.

Analyst Comments

In my opinion, 1080 lines of vertical resolution is not enough for professional use, so we assume AUO has in mind gamers for this monitor panel. (BR)
