AUO Boosts Brightness but Shrinks Bezels

AUO took a meeting room at the Holiday Inn by the RAI to meet with customers (and a small number of others) to show off their latest panels for digital signage and A/V applications. We went along.

First we looked at the firm’s latest video wall panels which are already in mass production with 55″ diagonal, 1.8mm gap between content and with brightness of 500 cd/m². A 700 cd/m² version will be put into production in April. The company is also looking at making sets based on the panel.

An 85″ high brightness with 2,500 cd/m² was shown and is in planning. The panel uses a high TNI LC mixture that is rated for 110ºC. The product should sample in Q2, with mass production at the end of the year. There will also be a 46″ panel with 1,500 cd/m² and 55″ and 65″ panels are also under development. In line with the trend to higher brightness, a 32″ FullHD panel with 1,000 cd/m² and the high temperature mixture is under development for use in retail applications, and also in transport where it can be used in landscape or portrait mode. Contrast is 4,000:1 and the panel has a 7.9mm even bezel. Power consumption is 82W.

Like LG and Samsung, AUO has seen more interest in stretch displays and has developed a 37″ stretch display that is made with a unique mask, rather than being cut down from a larger panel. The panel has 1920 x 540 resolution (32:9) and in line with the trends, 1,000 cd/m² of brightness and 4,000:! contrast.

AUO has also developed a 55″ FullHD dual sided set that can produce 700 cd/m² of brightness on both sides (a previous version had just 500 cd/m² on one side).
