AUO and 3M have joined forces to offer a display solution to TV makers. Under the auspices of the new alliance, AUO’s Advanced LCD (ALCD) technology will be combined with 3M’s Quantum Dot Enhancement Film (QDEF) (using Nanosys QDs) and AUO’s backlight components. The result, they say, is a wide colour gamut and high dynamic range for UltraHD TVs up to 85″.
ALCD is AUO’s brand name for displays combining multiple premium technologies, such as HDR, wide colour gamut, UltraHD and a curved form factor. Combined with 3M’s QDEF, the displays will surpass 100% of the NTSC gamut. They will also, says AUO, put TV brands in position to create devices that can reach the Rec.2020 colour space. Previously, only laser projectors were capable of coming close to this.
The new solution is applicable to all TV brands and, says AUO, can be integrated into existing manufacturing processes. Mass production will begin this year.
