What They Say
Toms Hardware had a look at the latest Asus Zenbook 17 Fold which it describes as a feeling like ‘a really big ThinkPad X1 Fold’. The system can be used with a virtual or magnetic keyboard that brings the configuration to the size of a 12.5″ 1920 x 1280 3:2 aspect ratio notebook. The full display is 2560 x 1920 with up to 323 cd/m² (as tested), 108.5% of DCI-P3 and 153 % of sRGB.
The hinge is rated for 30,000 folds but is not warranted for stylus use. To asked Asus about this comment. The company wrote that
“[a]ll folding screens are made from plastic, not glass, which is more sensitive to scratches and damage. Capacitive styluses (those with a rubber balloon tip) work fine and won’t damage the panel. But to avoid any confusion as to what stylus is ok and what isn’t, we prefer to play safe and officially note we don’t support any stylus.”
Thew reviewer though did try it with a soft stylus. He liked the display and its colour performance but found the device too big and heavy to use as a hand-held device and in general it is a bit bulky and heavy and expensive at around $3500.
What We Think
As it happens, I have to do some fairly intensive graphics work over the next couple of weeks when I’m also away from home, so I can start to appreciate why such a design as the Asus might be very useful. A fold out 17″ display would suit me. I just wouldn’t want to carry it around to the extent that I have to the rest of the time. (BR)
