Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities predicts that Apple will launch three new iPhone models in 2018.
- A 5.8″ OLED model with the same resolution as the iPhone X ((1125×2436, 458 PPI).
- A 6.5″ OLED model with a higher pixel density (480 – 500 PPI).
- A 6.1″ LCD model with a lower pixel density (320 – 330 PPI).
The rumours are based on various orders that Apple is rumoured to have placed with panel-makers, such as Samsung and Japan Display, in recent months. Kuo also believes that all iPhone models released next year will use the same bezel-less display mode as the iPhone X, with the same built-in notch at the top.
It has also been reported that Apple cancelled an order for 5.28″ panels due to “low marketability”, indicating that the company is committed to making larger-sized smartphones in the near future.
The next crop of iPhones may also be the first to feature wireless charging technology from Energous, a company that Apple has been rumoured to be working with since 2015. Energous has confirmed its transmitters will ship by the end of 2017 so, while the iPhone X missed out, the next iteration of Apple’s flagship smartphone could charge wirelessly from up to 15 feet (4.7m) away.
