Apple has refused a request by the FBI, made following the terrorist attacks in San Bernardino in December, to modify iOS and published an open letter explaining its reasoning. The company writes that it was asked to create a new version of iOS, to be installed on an iPhone recovered during the investigation. This software would act as a ‘backdoor’ to the phone, bypassing several security features. It could be used to unlock any iPhone in someone’s physical possession. Apple has been ordered to help by US magistrate Sheri Pym, although we consider it unlikely that the company will abandon its stated position quite so readily. (TA)
